An ARCHETYPE is an original model of a certain person or thing. Elvis Presley and Superman are enduring cultural ARCHETYPES.
Elvis is universally recognized as the quintessential rock ‘n’ roll ARCHETYPE. His rise to fame during the 1950s established “The King” as the blueprint for modern rebellious and charismatic rock stars. Similarly, Superman is universally recognized as the quintessential ARCHETYPE of the modern superhero. Debuting in 1938, the “Man of Steel” defined the genre by establishing key conventions – extraordinary powers, an outlandish costume, secret identity, and a role as a defender of humanity.
Elvis and Superman have yet to appear in an SAT vocabulary in context question. But ARCHETYPE did appear as a WRONG answer on the May 2026 SAT. The passage described how Caracol and Copan were Mayan cities that benefitted from and therefore were BENEFICIARIES of architectural achievements developed in earlier cities. Caracol and Copan were NOT ARCHETYPES since their architectural achievements were not entirely original.
ARCHETYPE – an original model of something from which others are derived; prototype
BENEFICIARY – a person or entity that derives benefits or advantages from another person or entity
