The three models in today’s picture are all showcasing stylish “in” looks. But will these looks remain fashionable? Probably not!
Today’s fashions are inherently EPHEMERAL or short-lived. Modern clothing and hair styles are deliberately designed to be fleeting and constantly changing. The modern fashion industry thrives on making current styles like the ones in today’s picture quickly become out of date.
Interestingly, the word EPHEMERAL has not gone out of fashion. EPHEMERAL is derived from the Ancient Greek word hemera meaning a day and thus signifying something that is temporary and short-lived. So, while EPHEMERAL describes things that are fleeting, the actual word has been long-lasting. I predict EPHEMERAL will become a permanent part of a student’s vocabulary when the word makes its inevitable appearance as a correct answer on an SAT vocabulary in context question!
EPHEMERAL – short-lived; fleeting
