The word LETHARGIC is now making its debut as a correct answer for a recent SAT vocabulary in context question. Ancient Greek students would have no problem understanding the meaning of LETHARGIC. According to Greek mythology, the River Lethe flowed through Hades. Drinking excessive amounts of its water would produce an overwhelming feeling of LETHARGY or sluggishness that would lead to a deep sleep.
SAT test writers had no problem writing a passage to illustrate LETHARGIC. For example, a film director known for creating action-packed superhero movies inexplicably produced a slow-paced film that left the audience feeling LETHARGIC.
Here’s my best advice for students preparing for the SAT: First and foremost, study the Winning Words. They are producing an impressive number of direct hits on difficult words. And second, don’t drink any water from the River Lethe! It will make you feel LETHARGIC as you answer difficult Module 2 questions.
LETHARGIC – a feeling of great sluggishness accompanied by a lack of energy and enthusiasm
