Mexico officially gained independence from Spain on September 27, 1821. The successful revolution inspired Mexican authors to write poems, essays, and novels celebrating their nation’s newly won independence.
SAT test writers have created a large cluster of Mexican Literary Renaissance questions that highlight authors who contributed to the OUTPOURING or sudden outburst of literary works. For example, Octavio Paz was a PROLIFIC or very productive writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Taken together, the writings by Paz and others make up a SUBSTANTIAL or very large portion of what is considered the canon of Mexican literature. This burst of writing helped the new nation to REALIZE or become fully aware of its new autonomous identity.
OUTPOURING – a sudden burst or flood
PROLIFIC – very productive
SUBSTANTIAL – very large; outsized
REALIZE – to become fully aware of something
