The W boson is a fundamental subatomic particle that acts as a carrier of the weak nuclear force. It plays a crucial role in in nuclear fusion in stars. Wait a minute - theW boson is part of a physics curriculum. What does it have to do with the SAT?
Good question! SAT test writers have recently become very interested in the W boson’s mass. It turns out that current measurements indicate that the SCALE or relative size of the W boson’s measured mass is significantly greater than that predicted by the standard model of particle physics. This discovery is UNDERMINING or weakening confidence in the previously accepted standard model.
SCALE and UNDERMINE are thus far the only two members of the W boson Cluster. However, it is certainly possible that SAT test writers are creating new vocabulary in context questions that will feature the W boson. I promise to keep you updated when new versions of the cluster appear!
SCALE – the relative size or extent of something
UNDERMINE – to weaken confidence in the authority of an established view or theory
